Propolis is one of the most useful bee products. Its curative properties have been well known even since the inkas. During the last years the interest of a number of investigators (doctors, chemists) all over the world rose. Several congresses and symposiums took place, which affirmed propolis as a unic product, with a broad sperctrum of biological activity, without whatever toxicity for man. This is the reason for the latter to be applied on a large scale with curative and prophylaxis purposes.
It is established that the main component of the propolis are the flavonoids. It contains also a number of organic acids (cinnamon, coffee), considerable quantity of mineral substances between which manganese, zinc, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, copper etc. Vitamines B1, B2, B6, C, E, nicotinic, pantotethic acids, aminoacids etc are also established. Besides the propolis contains 10-35% wax, 5-15% bee-bloom, 15% volatile oils, resin substances and up to 50% biologically active substances as well as some mechanical mixtures.
In 1984 it was finally proved on 74 strains that propolis has bactericidic and bacteriostatic effect, as well as antimicrobic effect. Important property of the propolis is its antibacterial effect on the TBC, salmonella, tiphus, and other authors of diseases.
The antimicrobic effect of the propolis on the microflora of the gastric-intestinal tract has been studied. Its continuous application unlike the antibiotics and sulfonamides provokes no appereance of resitstent form of the microorganisms. Strain microorganisms, sensitive to propolis appear with considerable resistance to antibiotics. The propolis has clinical and experimentally proved antifungus effect.
Propolis has a stimulating effect on the regeneration of the osseous, muscular and nervous tissues, possesses clearly expressed capacity of raising the epithelization in the healing of wounds.
It experimentally established that accepting propolis in vitro it stimulates the unspecific and specific immune protection of the organism and activates the functioning of number of protective mechanisms.
PROPHYLACTIC PROPOLIS PREPARATIONS
The propolis is a resinous substance of dark-green to black colour. It contains resins, waxes and pollen, enriched by ferments. It contains also microelements and vitamins.
Effect: The propolis has bactericidical, anti-inflamatory, antiseptic, anti-fungus and painkilling effect. It increases the immunological response of the organism and the formation of antitoxic, antibacterial and anti-virus antibodies. The propolis is absolutely harmless. The mortal dose for white rats is higher than 10 kg. /body mass/ The antibacterial and antivirus effect of the preparation is of special importance for grippe prophylaxis and for recuperation after illness.
Indications: Propolis can be used for diseases of the upper respiratory system (rhinitis, sinusitis, pharyngitis, otitis), of the lungs (chronic spastic bronchitis), and some forms of tuberculosis, of the digestive tract (stomatitis, gastric ulcer, duodenum ulcer, gastritis, enteritis, colitis, haemorrhoids), cutaneous (shingles, wounds, dermatitis, etc.), gynaecological (of inflamatory origin), kidneys (nephritis, etc.), radiculitis, etc.
